Problem of sexual objectification of females

This article will explore the reasons why the problem of sexual objectification of women in our society will never be solved.

I hope you can enjoy the reading regardless of whether you have concern about this problem or not!

If you are a male, perhaps you might think “I have never thought of any women as mere sexual object, you know. Just look from the girl idol group I like, I can still see them as equally lovely even though there are around forty of them!” and such, but here I mean something different.

That is, have you ever noticed how women are far more likely than men to be classified just by appearance?

While men might get labeled as an “actor”, a “singer,” or a “handsome guy,” as for women, such categorical way of calling can range from whether they are a “high school girl” or a “university student girl” to “female news anchor,” “flight attendant,” “long-haired girl,” “short-haired girl,” “cosplayer girl,” “pianist girl,” “female station attendant,” “female police officer,” and so on, which there are too many to count.

There might be further opinions from men that “well? Isn’t it good that I can see the beauty in all women?” Nevertheless, the way of how women are being labeled is still different from the case of men, that is while we call men as mister such and such who is an “actor” or “singer” as a person, it is common for women to be only referred to something like a “high school girl.” And it is as if they do not have any real names.

It is to the point that if we close our eyes for a moment and just listen to such ways of how women are being called, it may sound no different from the how we call parts of meat in the menu of a yakiniku restaurant.

This phenomenon is not something that can be easily expressed in words and thus women might not be much vocal in general, but I believe that they probably still feel that they are somehow being looked upon as “products” in the society.

Nevertheless, this article does not intend to say that we should “fight for women’s rights!” or the like.

Because if you read other “essays” of mine, you probably know how much of a pessimist I am.

Facing with such situation, perhaps feminists or whoever that at least have concern about women’s wellbeing might be pondering that above all else, the easiest way that women can be freed from patriarchy is to solve the problem of “skirts.”

Well, isn’t because of skirts that people started to fetichize high school girls? And that if women are able to wear trousers the same way men do and so nobody keeps paying attention to their legs anymore, it should be the beginning of equality between both sexes, right?

I think that such idea is rather off the mark.

As for people who cherish such thought, they might find how numbers of schools nowadays started using slacks as a uniform for girl students to be advancement of the society, but I would like you to keep this in mind.

Sorry for my expression, but don’t you really know how horny men are?

The problem is that even though women wear clothes that do not expose any sensitive parts of their bodies, as for men, they are still good at finding everything relating to women to be arousal. For example, if the woman is wearing proper and good-looking suit instead of short skirt uniform of a high school student, there would still be men who find working woman or female boss as objects to fetishize.

With such an eye, no matter how women cover themselves, men would still be able to imagine in any way that satisfies them.

And if you have ever heard about the Woke movement, the push for the “uglier” female representation is also part of it. That is because the urge to become prettier among women is being viewed as driven by men’s desire rather than it being what women naturally wish to.

Such as with Miss Japan beauty pageant. Even though there might be women who wish to be beautiful, wearing elegant dress along with high heels and shine radiantly on the stage, there are also opinions that this is not their own volition, but rather because of patriarchy that their career advancement is limited, and thus the situation forces them to participate in the event.

While I would not presume to judge whether the beauty pageant should be abolished or not (as for men, I doubt that they would participate in all kind of pageants if there is monetary incentive), in fact what we call feminism or the Woke movement encroaches further into the gaming industry too.

イメージは eventhubs.com より

Although the movement against the sexual portrayal of female in gaming industry, in which female characters are made to be more unappealing to men, is still somewhat only a trend in the western countries, as for Japanese games that up until now usually let players take a peek inside female characters’ skirts also, because of such movement, there are many recent games that have characters wearing shorts under skirts instead.

Still, I wonder if this would help anything.

Even if all sorts of sexual objectification is over, isn’t what is the most problematic is still “the way men took at women”?

In case that you are a male, you might not have noticed how some women wear masks and try not to meet people’s eyes in public just because they try to avoid eye contact from men, or to have any interaction with them.

By that, if as a male you think that “I just look at you because you are pretty. You should feel proud, right? Hahahaha,” I am pleased to give you the certificate that you are the person that do not understand women at all.

If you are wish to end sexual objectification for good, these lustful eyes are going to be the last problem that needs to be solved.

But as I have said before that there is still a question of whether if there really is anything we can do to solve it.

For example, even if all high school girls wear slacks and women have the same opportunity in career advancement with men, also Miss Japan beauty pageant no longer continues and that all female characters in the video games have average looks, but still when you walk along the streets the men are ogling at you as always, what are you going to do?

Should this equality movement forcefully restrict where men should look at too?

There are of course men who are feminists that criticize sexual objectification as I mentioned who may not so explicitly ogle at women, but I doubt that they have any less sexual desire that other men.

So, what if while such men do seem to be loving and kindhearted and you might find them to be cute, privately they still objectify you sexually in their imagination and do something not fit to be mentioned here with themselves, would such behavior be acceptable?

(Unfortunately, I think this is the habit of most men.)

Thus, not only their eyes, in order to get rid of sexual objectification and cleanse our society we should control their thoughts too?

Doesn’t it seem like that there is no end to this problem?

Instead of this being rooted in patriarchy or is something that has gone wrong in our society, what if it is what men naturally are and won’t be changed for whatever we do?

I will not say that this is a solution, but since we might not be able to convince men to care for women’s feelings any more than this, I think it would be more practical for women to familiarize themselves with men’s way of thinking.

With how we feel disgusted to be looked upon sexually, and also for the powerlessness of our existence within the male-dominated society, it seems that our country have created the female-only societies to solve the problems.

Within such female-only societies, women would keep contact with only other women, participating in arts and crafts or other activities deemed lovely and fit for women, so that in this safe environment we may feel that we are stronger once again.

However, the question is that if such feeling of power is obtained by how we really get stronger, or is it just because there are no men around so we only do compare ourselves with other women?

Then, isn’t what is called female-only society small a place in the corner of a much bigger society where men fenced off, probably being like a fishpond in the house, as the place where men can use to relax and observe the colors of their beauty?

To illustrate this matter, I would like to use the anime “O Maidens in Your Savage Season” as an example.

The story of this anime is about a group of high school girls who have to tackle with their teenage emotions and loves. Through the plot that is told mainly from female points of view, the overall message is somewhat to show “women as being themselves,” which probably with an intention to raise awareness of women’s presence in the society. Yet, when we look at manga or anime that cater towards male readers, I doubt if there is a need for any message at all.

In such manga or anime for male readers, even though the protagonists are freely making harems full of lovely girls as a side quest to saving the world, not to mention that the authors can also add all kinds of sexy scenes to their heart’s content, for some reason in girl stories, it is as if being a reflection of the real world that female characters just stay with other women in group, doing cute things together.

In “O Maidens in Your Savage Season,” out of five of the main characters one is a lesbian, which in Sailor Moon and many other works targeting female readers there are such characters too. But if we are to compare it with stories for male, we would never find any norm that out of five guys there should be one gay character, and I do not know that in what way would the love between females, or in the case of “O Maidens in Your Savage Season,” the presence of a man-hating lesbian character, become any strength to females.

Perhaps in Japan, we do believe that by empowering women, it means that we just make sure there are no men around them.

And actually, the author and also the screenwriter of the anime “O Maidens in Your Savage Season” is a female.

Even with women who want to push for the empowerment of their gender that are in the position to freely write any stories they want, which cannot be said anymore that they are being controlled by men, they would still write females only stories, that when there is not enough love interest they simply add another lesbian character. Upon our seeing such phenomenon time and again and thus being able to roughly understand how our society is, whenever we think that it is hard to live as a woman, should we really blame the so-called patriarchy for everything?

If we are to compare one sex that has a long list of things to avoid and has to worry about propriety all the time, to the other sex that has much more freedom since birth, I am not sure that they would not be in a position to compete with each other. And that is not only physically, but also mentally that one sex keeps it timid too.

In fact, at first sexual objectification of women may have caused by patriarchy, but then when such rule is settled, perhaps the ones who continue to keep it alive are the women themselves.
