Whatever we like to hear is the truth

Thank you for visiting my blog!

In this time, I would like to talk about something that might sound ordinary, but it could be a bit philosophical to think about.

As for us who still hold on to the in truth in the midst of this corrupted world which not everyone might be capable of(!), we do believe that whenever the evidence manifests itself or at least if someone points out what is correct for us, we would be able to adjust ourselves to the newfound truth. However, if each of us were really the lover of truth, I wonder if the world would have become as corrupted as it is.

And the example that might illustrate this matter most clearly is from the scandals of celebrities.

kinki-dogschool.com さんより

Whenever there are scandals or other paparazzi news in the entertainment industry, such as dating news, celebrities’ improper behaviors or even illegal activities, as long as there is still no concrete evidence, there will always be those who try to protect such celebrities and also the haters.

And yet no matter what we believe, it is no different from the lucky bag you bought from stores that no matter how you open it, the products inside would never change.

And that is also the case with the truth, that no matter you like or dislike it, seeing it as possible or unlikely, or whether it suits your view of moral values or not, we can say that the truth would never change.

That being said, since we are no gods and so we do not know what is true or false, until such concrete evidence appears to us it should be better for us to curb our criticism and keep to the “principle of presumption of innocence” just like the court of justice. Besides, it may even serve as a good precautionary measure when fans of a certain celebrity attack our negative remarks.

Nevertheless, there is some problem in this way of thinking.

And that is “does truth need evidence to establish itself as truth?”

dog.benesse.ne.jp さんより

If we are to talk to someone who cannot see about the existence of the sun or other things that can only be seen with eyes, just because of how we can never show any evidence to such person, should such things including the sun be considered as not existing?

Accordingly, if a certain celebrity really did something that is really reprehensible, just because of the evidence is yet to surface would it be just a lie or falsehood?

Especially in many situations, what we call “evidence” is not something that can be procured conveniently.

From the example of scandals, I would like you also to consider this which might be more relatable to your life.

And that is regarding our comments on social media.

I think all of us might have this feeling once in a while that we, as an expert of someone who is knowledgeable in a certain field, come across a certain video on the internet that we feel we have hands-on experience and end up wanting to comment on the video. However, especially when such field of expertise does not have fancy terminology, we might have a hard time convincing people about how our comment is good and truthful, and for the reason they might not pay attention at all.

Following the principle we commonly believe that the truth will always manifest itself, there might be objection that if our comment does not become top comment, we might not really be experienced in such fields and just overrate ourselves. But in such case, you can try once again by commenting on some videos that you feel you are knowledgeable, and see how much the possibility of such comments becoming become the top comments is.

The Hatena Blog user ennaki2 used to mention this matter in the blog too!

The point we should notice is that with the comments of experts, just because they could not verify their expertise or who they really are, it does not mean that their opinions are not actually rooted in some solid knowledge.

So if we are to return to the example of celebrities, from time to time we might see news articles or comments that seem untrustworthy and could have been written by someone with malicious intent, but how are we going to verify that the people who write such information really do not know nothing?

If the person who gives information or writes comments do know about the scandals in detail, just by the absence of evidence or inability to show it would make them a liar?

There may be times that scandals are not true, but when they turn out to be true, as for us who devoutly protect celebrities that we like before such truth is revealed, doesn’t it look like we are just people who are in denial of the truth upon looking back?

As for us, what is called “truth” may have omnipresent existence comparable to Mount Fuji, that even if we cannot see it on a foggy day, when it gets sunny it is going to appear before our eyes. However, that is far from being true.

In this corrupted world there are countless occurrences of injustice. And even with what we think we can safely believe such as what is written in school textbooks, in the next few decades when the social trend changes, other cases of injustice may show themselves again from such pages.

Even if we do not know much detail, we can say with certainty that there are a great many people who are wronged and misunderstood by the society, carrying bitterness till the end of their lives. And how we do not realize that is probably because we are another person in the society who perpetrates such injustice such as by misjudging them,

Instead of the truth being like Mount Fuji, it is being as light as dandelion fluffs, that with just a slight puff of wind it would be enough to blow them all away

If we who feel no qualms about holding on to falsehood, do cast a doubtful eye at truth whenever one appears, demanding all sorts of evidence while asking all kinds of question we can think of, although it is true that with the limits of human beings we are not capable of knowing what is true and what is not, does it really look like that we are someone who loves the truth?

Or, rather, that we are just hold tight to our own beliefs, and have no interest whether something is true or not?

I have a personal question that I keep asking myself until now, that if after the scandals of celebrities have settled and the truth comes to the surface, as for us who were being fervently protective of certain celebrities previously, would we be willing admit that we were protecting “falsehood,” or that we would conveniently forget it, and go on to protect other falsehoods from time to time?
